PURPOSE:To enable gradational printing to be performed while maintaining resolution, by providing a plurality of ink layers differing in ink film thickness on a base. CONSTITUTION:Ink layers 6a-6e are provided on a base 5 divisionally in a plurality of zones, with the ink film thickness changed stepwise along the longitudinal direction of an ink ribbon. The ribbon is fed in the longitudinal direction thereof by a ribbon-feeding mechanism on the basis of gradation data, and when a predetermined one of the ink layers comes to a point being opposed to a printing head, printing is conducted on a paper 9 by the printing head 8 through the ink ribbon 7. The film thickness of an ink layer 12a on the paper corresponding to a thinner one 11a of the ink layers on the ribbon 7 is smaller, and the film thicknesses of ink layers 12b, 12c on the paper are increased as the film thicknesses of the corresponding ink layers 11b, 11c on the ribbon 7 are increased. Accordingly, of an ink image formed on the paper, the parts of a thinner ink layer have a lower reflection density while the parts of a thicker ink layer have a higher reflection density. As a result, density gradation can be set on a dot basis.
