To remove oxides from aluminium-killed steel, uranium is added whereby uraniumaluminium oxide compounds of high density are formed; the steel is then poured under such conditions that settling out of these compounds is substantially complete before solidification occurs, whereby an ingot is formed, a major portion of which is free of said compounds and is subsequently separated from the minor bottom portion in which they are concentrated. The uranium may be added either in metallic form or as ferro-uranium or aluminium-uranium alloy. Further deoxidation beyond that resulting from the addition of aluminium is said to occur.
