PURPOSE:To obtain a display of an extremely high contrast ratio at a wide visual field angle by combining a negative type liquid crystal cell of high contrast, illuminating means provided with directivity and plate consisting of a group of microlenses. CONSTITUTION:The light transmitted through the display segments of the liquid crystal cell 1 with polarizing films has also directivity when the linearly progressing light provided with the directivity in the direction perpendicular to a substrate is projected on the liquid crystal cell 11 from behind the same. Light shielding property to the light in a front direction is extremely good in the non-display segments of the cell 11 and, therefore, the linear light toward the front direction is nearly completely shielded and there is no leakage of light, since the directivity is provided on the light. Said segments are, therefore, sufficiently dark even when viewed from the directions except the front. The directivity of the light transmitted through the cell 11 is, thereupon, eliminated by the plate 14 consisting of the group of the microlenses disposed on the front face of the cell 11 so that the display light is scattered over the wide visual angle. The extremely high contrast ratio is thereby obtd. over the wide visual field range. |
