PURPOSE:To perform reading error correction with a high probability even if a reading error is produced due to an operational error, etc., of a mechanical system, by providing a head position displacing means separately from a head position controlling means and finely displacing a head in multiple stages within a desired extent. CONSTITUTION:The position of a carriage 4 is controlled by means of the position controlling means 20, actuator means 10, etc., of the processor 9 of a disk storage device 100 and a head 3 is positioned to a desired reference position of a disk 1. When a reading error is produced through a read/write circuit 5 under such condition, the head position displacing means 40 of the processor 9 is actuated by means of an off-track detecting circuit 22a, etc., and the head 3 is successively finely off-track displaced in the positive or negative direction within a prescribed extent. This displacement is continued until 'no reading error' is detected. Therefore, even when a reading error is produced due to an operational error, etc., of a mechanical system, reading error correction is performed with a high probability. |
