PURPOSE:To perform good quality printing, by detecting the thickness of printing paper by a detection roller having the diameter corresponding to that of a platen roller and correcting the gap between a printing head and the platen roller. CONSTITUTION:In such a case that printing is applied to printing paper 20 whose thickness changes at a fold part 21, when the part of the fold part 21 of the printing paper 20 enters the gap between a detection roller 131 and a fixed roller 132, the detection roller 131 is pushed by the thickness of the printing paper 20 to displace and the displacement thereof is amplified by a lever 133 to be applied to a displacement sensor 135 as the deflection of the second arm 133b. The thickness detection signal indicating the thickness of the part of the fold 21 is generated from said deflection to be supplied to a controller 143 and, after the delay time prescribed by a delay circuit, the gap correction signal proportional to the level of the thickness detection signal is generated to be supplied to a drive motor 142. The motor 142 allows a pinion 141b to rotate in proportion to the level of the gap correction signal to displace the printing head 11 on a rack 141a. |
