PURPOSE:To shorten the correcting time of characters by adding a same character string deciding means which inputs the recognizing candidate characters of two unit character strings and decides whether these two character strings are equal to each other or not. CONSTITUTION:A misread character 18 is corrected by an input means 7 and a corrected unit character string 19 including the corrected character 18 is set. Then a same character string deciding means 9 detects the misread unit character strings 21 and 22 which are regarded equal to the character string 19 out of those character strings based on the recognizing candidate characters. These strings 21 and 22 are replaced with the string 19 via a control means 8. In such a way, the character correcting time is shortened.
