PURPOSE:To recognize the contours of the life with high accuracy by photographing the life like fishes, etc., which are bred in a breeding space illuminated via a light scattering medium and emphasizing selectively the luminance changes of pictures of said life. CONSTITUTION:An image pickup device 20 projects the light given from an illuminator 15 to a water tank 10 via a light scattering plate 16 and photographs the fishes 14A-14C. Thus the fishes in the water can be photographed. These photographed picture signals are led to a picture monitor device 30. The device 30 performs the A/D conversion of those picture signals and stores them in a multi-level picture memory 32M. An X-direction differentiating circuit 33X receives the signals from the memory 32M and differentiates the multi-level pictures in the X direction. In the same way, a Y-direction differentiating circuit 33Y differentiates the multi-level pictures in the Y direction. A picture addition circuit 34 adds the signals of both circuits 33X and 33Y together for output of the contour emphasized pictures. Thus the contours of fishes are recognized with high accuracy.
