PURPOSE:To lighten an engine while ensuring the reinforcing strength of a cylinder block by providing a plate member made of a sheet metal in between a cylinder-block skirt part and an oil-pan rail part and installing reinforcing members to said plate member. CONSTITUTION:A plate member 15 made of a sheet metal is provided in between the skirt part 1b of a cylinder block 1 and the rail part 10a of an oil pan 10. Each part in the center of the plate member 15 is curved to the oil pan 10 side to prevent it from interfering with the track of a crankshaft and reinforcing members 16 are fixed to the sites opposite to main bearing caps 6 inside the curved parts in a direction perpendicularly intersecting to the crankshaft. And, the parts opposite to the end main bearing caps 6 are bent so as to be brought into contact with these caps forming installing parts 15d, and the plate member 15 is fastened to the main bearing caps 6 with bolts.
