The upper and lower fabrics are woven together with longitudinally-directed or transversely-directed binding threads. By means of the latter, the different transverse contractions of these fabrics can be controlled, but not the oscillating relative motions between the upper and lower fabrics, which motions are caused by continuous load changes during the passage through the roll system of the wet end in the direction of running and which destroy the binding threads by friction. The composite fabric should therefore be formed in such a way that it is particularly suitable for absorbing longitudinally- and transversely-directed displacement stresses, by almost cancelling the elongation of the longitudinally-directed binding thread parts by the shrinkage of the transversely-directed binding thread parts, so that a substantial reduction in the relative motions between the upper and lower fabrics is achieved. For this purpose, it is proposed that at least some of the binding points of at least a part of the binding threads in the upper fabric are arranged relative to each of the binding points in the lower fabric, following in the longitudinal direction of the binding threads, in such a way that the binding points following one another alternately in the lower and upper fabrics in the longitudinal direction of the binding thread are laterally offset relative to the perpendicular on the wire surface, the projection of at least part of the binding threads onto a plane parallel to the wire surface being a zig-zag line at least in part lengths.
