PURPOSE:To obtain light guides which facilitate adjustment, are less increased in loss at the time of fixing, are less deteriorated with lapse of time and have high reliability by individually measuring the thicknesses of light guide substrates and working V grooves to the 2nd substrate to meet with the measured thickness. CONSTITUTION:The 1st substrate 1 formed with the light guides is placed on the 3rd substrate 17 and the height from the surface of the 3rd substrate 17 is measured. The V grooves 13-16 are worked to the 2nd substrates 11, 12 in such a manner that the centers of the cores 18 of optical fibers 6-9 come to the height obtd. by subtracting the depth at which the light guides and the optical fibers 6-9 are most optically ideally coupled from the measured height. The optical fibers 6-9 are then fixed to the grooves 13-16 of the 2nd substrates 11, 12 and the end face of the 1st substrate perpendicular to a light propagation direction is butted against the end face perpendicular to the grooves 13-16 so that the centers 18 of the cores and the central axes in the light propagation direction of the light guides formed to the 1st substrate 1 are aligned. The inexpensive guide type device with optical fiber terminals having high reliability is thereby obtd.
