In an internal combustion engine, the cylinder block, cylinder head and crankshaft bearing of which form a standard unit in the form of a power unit carrier, which is suspended by way of a rigid fixing in the engine housing partially enclosing it, the engine housing terminating in the area of the cylinder block and forming a circumferential gap there with the cylinder block, according to the invention a slight vacuum of approximately 100 mm water head, preferably caused by connection of the power unit compartment to the intake pipe (14) by way of a hose connection (12) with pressure control valve (13), is created and maintained in the power unit compartment. By means of its shaping and/or at least one insert, the circumferential gap on the one hand prevents lubricating oil from escaping and on the other prevents splash water and coarse dirt from getting in. The necessary insulation effect to counter airborne noise is ensured by the airborne noise absorption capacity of the insert material. <IMAGE>
