PURPOSE:To aim at obtaining a stable combustion of the fuel gas without being restricted by the position of the ignition point and a high compressibility in the fuel gas so as to be free from an abnormal combustion by introducing a laser beam into a combustion chamber and then providing the combustion chamber with an ignition device which causes the laser beam to converge upon a point. CONSTITUTION:An ignition device 5 is comprised of a laser light source 6, which uses a laser diode or the like, a lens 7, which causes a laser beam to converge upon an ignition point 4a in a combustion chamber 4, an optical aperture 8, through which the laser beam is allowed to pass, and a transparent plate 10, which uses a transparent high heat-resisting and pressure-proofing glass or the like, for closing an opening 9 for the optical aperture 8. Hereupon, the ignition point 4a can be set at an arbitrary position by adjusting the focal length of the lens 7 and the angle between the optical axis of the laser beam and a cylinder 1. In addition, this technic can be applied even to a multiple cylinder engine, and a stable combustion can also be obtained by increasing the degree of freedom for the arrangement of the laser light source 6 through using an optical fiber and a mirror, and then combining a rotating mirror or a rotating drum and a distributor with a self-focusing lens or the like.
