For the application of separating off cholesterol-containing precipitates from blood plasma, a filter medium (6) built up in multiple layers is used which comprises at least one open precipitate-adsorbing filter medium (7) and a microporous membrane (9) controlling the pressure ratios in the filter element, the layer (7) specifically adsorbing the precipitate being hydrophobic and the microporous membrane (9) being hydrophilic. In addition, a positively-charged adsorption medium (9) is provided on the side of the microporous membrane (8) facing away from the hydrophobic adsorption medium (7). In this manner, a high adsorption surface area for the precipitates and heparin is created and kept accessible.
