The invention relates to a process for the biological purification of waste water (effluent), in particular industrial waste water, in which the waste water loaded with biodegradable contaminants is fed to a tank containing activated sludge and is there mixed with the activated sludge with simultaneous aeration, the contaminants contained in the waste water being biodegraded by the microorganisms of the activated sludge, and in which the mixture comprising activated sludge and waste water is divided in a secondary clarifier and at least some of the activated sludge is returned to the tank and the purified waste water is conducted away. In order, with a given size of activated sludge tank, to trap sudden loads without difficulty, to prevent stripping of volatile compounds and to exclude the presence of toxic or inhibitory pollutants leading to a significant impairment of the efficiency, a high-boiling-point, organic solvent is added to the activated sludge in the tank.
