PURPOSE:To prevent a measurement sensor from being broken by taking a measurement while holding a body to be measured at specific height from a sensor head. CONSTITUTION:The measurement sensor 21 measures the distance to the body 60 to be measured and a position detector 12 measures the position of a measuring instrument main body 10. A current position arithmetic means 52 calculates a current position from said detected values and an NC control part 40 performs profile control through a profile arithmetic means 56 so that the head of the measurement sensor 21 is at a constant distance from the body 60 to be measured. The output of the current position arithmetic means 52, on the other hand, is stored in a measurement point position coordinate storage means 53 and used as shape measurement data. A measured distance integrating means 54 measures a distance by using the output of the storage means 53 and the measuring operation is stopped when the distance value exceeds a measurement forecast distance set by a measurement initial value setting means 51. Consequently, a measurement start point, a measurement direction, and the measurement forecast distance are only set to perform the measuring operation automatically.
