C2- 6 Olefines are oligomerized at elevated temperatures and pressures over a catalyst which is either an acid catalyst or a halide of a metal in Group IIB of the Periodic Table, and in the presence of up to 10 weight per cent, based on the olefine, of an alkyl halide having up to 10 carbon atoms. Suitable catalysts are phosphoric acid, silicotungstic acid and zinc chloride, any of which may be supported on a suitable carrier. The alkyl halide preferably has the same number of carbon atoms as the olefine to be oligomerized. In the examples, propylene and n-butene are oligomerized. |
