In an anaesthesia unit with at least one reservoir for an anaesthetic agent and with a ventilator to which the gas is conveyed from the reservoir via a line and which in a known manner is connected to the airways of a patient, in order to keep the usage of anaesthetic gas as low as possible and at the same time to ensure that the patient is nevertheless ventilated continuously with fresh anaesthetic gas of defined composition, according to the invention the expiratory gas is returned directly or via a compressor (28) to the reservoir (8,9) through at least one filter (20), in which predetermined gas components such as water vapour and CO2 are filtered out. ……
