PURPOSE:To optionally read an original for either of a reflected light and a transmitted light by lighting a light source provided on upper and lower part of an original platen selectively. CONSTITUTION:When a reflection mode is selected, a lighting lamp 21 is lighted and a scanner is moved. The light from the lighting lamp 21 is radiated to a reflection reference plate 43 and an original O via the original placing table 2 and the reflected light is led to a photoelectric converter 22 via an optical system 23. When the transmission mode is selected, the scanners 3, 4 are moved synchronously and the light from the lighting lamp 6 is radiated to the transparent reference plate 42 and the original O. The transmitted light is led to the photoelectric converter 22 via the original placing table 2 and the optical system 23.
