PURPOSE:To reduce costs for a banknote stacking device by furnishing a lever on a shaft to drive a sheet transport path through a one-way clutch, and by connecting the tip of this lever with a sheet pressing member energized by spring toward the original position by the use of a cable. CONSTITUTION:When a banknote is checked whether it is genuine to permit to be stacked, it is retained in a channel-shaped member 3 temporarily, and a motor 7 rotates counterclockwise. At this time, a one-way clutch is locked, and a lever 12 rotates clockwise. Consequently a pressing member 4 rises against the action of a spring 15 to heave a stacking member 5 and the banknote temporarily retained therein after passing through the channel-shaped member 3 against the action of another spring 16. Thereby the temporarily retained banknote is stacked upon being transferred from this member 3 to the space between this and the stacking member 5. When the rotational angle of the lever 12 exceeds 180 deg. by drive of the motor 7, the one-way clutch 11 is released, and the pressing member 4 is restituted by the spring 15.
