The present invention relates to an apparatus for applying hemostatic or ligating clips. The apparatus is provided with a unitary chassis (22) on which all other components are attached. A clip housing (20) is disposed at the forward end of the apparatus and stores a plurality of abuttingly arranged forward facing clips that are fed one at a time to the jaws (14). Upon closure of the handles (18), the jaws (14) are drawn rearwardly into the apparatus and cammed closed to deform a clip positioned between the jaws (14). Upon release of the handles (18), the apparatus returns to its unactuated position and advances a clip to the jaws (14). The apparatus includes a lockout member (66) to prevent actuation of the apparatus while a clip is in transition from the clip housing (20) to the jaws (14).
