<p>A spark-ignition overhead valve type internal combustion engine (10) has its cylinder (12) or cylinders closed at the top by semi-spherical cylinder heads (22) with the piston (14) terminating in a crown (14b) of semi-spherical configuration sized slightly smaller than that of the cylinder head (22). Shallow recesses (54, 56) within the piston crown (14b) to opposite sides of a spark plug aperture (26) form dual combustion chambers (C) with a recess (52) within the piston crown (14b) aligned with and facing the cylinder head aperture (26), forms an initial ignition area (A), with shallow narrow grooves (60) leading from the initial ignition area (A), within the piston crown (14b), to the shallow combustion chamber defining recesses (54, 56). The burning process of a fuel-air charge is slowed from the initial ignition area (A) through the shallow grooves (60) and thence through the shallow combustion chambers (C) to retard the explosion process.</p> |
