PURPOSE:To prevent the surface of a web from being scratched, by rotating a guide roll at a speed corresponding to the running speed of the web before the guide roll is brought into contact with the web on running during the positions of rolled webs are replaced with each other. CONSTITUTION:When the remaining amount of a web W is decreased after the web W is paid our from a web roll 5a, a first arm 4 rotatably supporting at both ends guide rolls 5A, 5B and a second arm 6 provided at both ends with guide rolls 7A, 7B are turned clockwise about a shaft 3 as a center point. Due this turn, one 7A of the guide rollers attached to the ends of the second arm 6 makes into contact with the web W on running. In this phase, the peripheral speed of the guide roll 7A is set previously to the same speed as that of the running web W by means of a drive device so as to decrease the relative speed between the guide roll 7A and the running web W. As result the guide roll 7A makes contact with the web W which is apparently stopped with respect to the guide roll 7A, thereby it is possible to prevent stress from being produced and also to prevent the surface of the web W from being scratched.
