PURPOSE:To obtain a composition comprising a polymer a hydrophilic monomer and a crosslinkable monomer, being hardened by irradiation with electron beams, and having a sufficient resistance to clouding and excellent durability, aging resistance and mechanical strengths. CONSTITUTION:This hydrophilic membrane forming composition comprises a polymer, a hydrophilic monomer and a crosslinkable monomer and forms a hydrophilic membrane by irradiation with electron beams. The hydrophilic membrane is obtd. by mixing the above components, spreading the mixture in the form of a membrane, and applying 0.5-20Mrad electron beam thereto, whereby the polymer is crosslinked with the hydrophilic monomer and the crosslinkable monomer. This composition may contain a surface active agent or, if necessary, a solvent. The polymer should pref. be hydrophobic, and may be either a non-functional or a functional one.
