PURPOSE:To simplify an assembly work process by keeping an engagement condition between a timing belt and one of pulleys, preventing the engagement of the belt with the other pulley and pressing both pulleys to the axial ends thereof while keeping the pulleys free to turn relatively. CONSTITUTION:A cam pulley 35, a clamp pulley 69 and a timing belt 44 approximately positioned on a work pallet respectively held with both retaining devices 15 and 18 of a gang head 6, shift to the side of an engine, with the clamp pulley 69 engaged with the timing belt 44 on the operation of a belt presser 68, and the cam pulley 35 disengaged from the belt 40 via an inserted slip plate. And centering shafts 37 and 67 are engaged with a crankshaft and a camshaft, both pulleys 35 and 69 are caused to turn in a chattering way by the operation of actuators 22 and 52, thereby obtaining engagement via a key. And the slip plate is drawn out and a belt tensioner 19 is actuated. In this way, it becomes possible to simplify and automate an assembly work process.
