Alpha-aminoethylene phosphonate betaines of the formula <IMAGE> R1 is hydrogen or methyl; X is <IMAGE> a is 0, 1, 2 or 3, with the condition that when X is <IMAGE> that a be greater than 1; R2 and R3 are independently C1-C6 alkyl, aryl, benzyl, or cyclohexyl; Y is hydrogen or hydroxyl; b is 0, 1, 2, or 3; Z is C1-C6 alkyl, aryl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, or <IMAGE> and M is hydrogen, metallic cation, or ammonium ion are disclosed as are homo- and copolymers thereof.
