PURPOSE:To obtain a resin of high refractive index comprising a polymer obtained from a polymerizable monomer of a specified structure as an essential ingredient, which does not require any cumbersome operation in its preparation and can provide members of, e.g., lenses, optical fibers, optical discs, etc. which are excellent in colorlessness and clarity. CONSTITUTION:The title product is a resin of high refractive index >=1.55, comprising a polymer obtained from one or more members of polymerizable monomers A of formula I (where R1 and R2 are each H, CH3; m and n are each 1-3) (e.g. compounds of formulas II and III) as an essential ingredient and, if necessary, other polymerizable monomer B (e.g. methyl methacrylate, styrene, etc.) which can provide a homopolymer having a refractive index >=1.48. By using the monomer A as an essential ingredient, the product can be a resin having a high refractive index and excellent in colorlessness and clarity. The monomer A is a colorless, clear liquid at room temperature, and does not require any cumbersome operation in casting into a mold in the case of obtaining a polymer by casting polymerization or in the mixing with the monomer B. Since the polymn. can be effected from a low temperature, the resulting polymer can be prevented from strains occurring in molded products thereof. |
