PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound at improved productivity and increased rate of reaction, by thermally condensing an aromatic compound with sulfuric acid, fuming sulfuric acid, sulfuric anhydride or chlorosulfonic acid in the presence of specific sulfonic acids as catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective diaryl sulfones (e.g. dichlorodiphenyl sulfone) can be produced by the thermal condensation of an aromatic compound of formula I (R1-R3 are H, halogen, alkyl, aryl or alkoxy or two or R1, R2 and R3 may together form a tetralin ring or naphthalene ring) (e.g. monochlorobenzene) with sulfuric acid, fuming sulfuric acid, sulfuric anhydride or chlorosulfonic acid in the presence of sulfonic acids of formula III (R4-R6 are H, halogen, hydroxyl, nitro, alkyl, aryl, etc., or two of R4-R6 may together form a ring; m is 0-3; n is 1-3). The process is advantageous because the catalyst may be added to the reaction system or formed during the reaction process. |
