PURPOSE:To simplify the structure, by separating the shape of bar codes on a mark into two rows such that one row comprises linear patterns of alternating black and with fixed or variable interval while the other row comprises information signal patterns attached synchronously with the linear patterns. CONSTITUTION:A mark applied around the winding shaft of ink paper 7 which can not be touched by hand or applied to the inside of a cassette 1 frame which is hard to access with hand is hardly subjected to contamination or corrosion because the applying position is specified, thus indicating information concerning the ink paper accurately at all times. Two rows of patterns on the mark are read out simultaneously through an optical read-out sensor 23, then output from a sensor 23 for reading out recording patterns 41 in which the type, characteristics, etc., of the ink paper are described synchronously with FG pattern 42 of alternating white and black is sampled and converted into a digital electrical signal. Consequently, record can be read out even when reading/ scanning speed is not fixed, and precise specification such as constant reading/ scanning speed or constant speed hysteresis is not required in the mechanism section of printer.
