PURPOSE:To produce the title resin having a high melt viscosity and being noncolored and nondeteriorating in properties at low cost, by reacting a polyphenylene sulfide resin with a specified silane compound. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. polyphenylene oxide resin (A) containing at least 90mol.% repeating units of the formula and having a melt viscosity of 10-20,000P (as measured at 310 deg.C and a shear rate of 1,200sec<-1>) is mixed with 0.01-5pts.wt. at least one silane compound (B) selected from among a vinylalkoxysilane, an epoxyalkoxysilane, an amino-alkoxysilane and a mercaptoalkoxysilane (e.g., vinyltriethoxysilane), and the mixture is kneaded for 30sec-15min at a temperature by 5-100 deg.C higher than the m.p. of component A to react component A with component B.
