An indexing and transporting mechanism having a plurality of work-holding spindles (6) spaced around a carousel (1), the carousel (1) being journalled on a machine frame (4) provided with work-performing stations (11) and being indexable to carry the spindles (6) being arranged to be indexed through one complete revolution at some stations and not at others by a work-holding spindle orienting and indexing mechanism which consists of a track (19) carried by the machine frame (4) concentric with the carousel journals (2 and 3), projections (18) extending from the work-holding spindles (6) which engage the track (19) to prevent rotation of the work-holding spindles (6) relative to the carousel (1) over part of a revolution of the carousel (1), the track (19) being interrupted at the stations (11) where indexing occurs, each interrupted portion of the track (19) being mounted on indexable spindles carried by the machine frame (4), each interrupted portion of the track being arranged to be indexed through one complete revolution while the work-holding spindle (6) is at the station (11). |
