Acid half esters of the formula <IMAGE> (1) wherein R is an aliphatic radical of 16 to 24 carbon atoms, one of Y1 and Y2 is hydrogen and the other is phenyl, one of X1 and X2 is hydrogen and the other is methyl, one of Z1 and Z2 is hydrogen and the other is the maleic acid radical or the phthalic acid radical, m1 and m2 are each 0 or 1, s1, s2, p1 and p2 are integers, with the sum of s1+s2 being 5 to 12 and the sum of p1+p2 is 5 to 30. These compounds are suitable for a wide range of utilities in textile application. In particular, they are used as assistants for dyeing wool-containing fibre materials with anionic dyes or mixtures of dyes.
