PURPOSE:To improve resolution and light transmission rate by a method wherein a protective layer is formed which is separated at a halfway distance between adjacent photoelectric conversion elements and light incident windows. CONSTITUTION:A protective layer 109 is formed which is separated through a separating groove 110 at a halfway distance between adjacent photoelectic conversion elements 105 and 106 and light incident windows 107 and 108. Reflecting light from a manuscript on the protective layer 109 travels to reach an interface between the protective layer 109 and the separating groove 110 and is totally reflected in case of light being satisfied with the total reflection condition, and is trapped by the photoelectric conversion elements consisting of elements 103, 104, and 106. Even if light is not satisfied with a total reflection condition, it is partially reflected, thereby light trapped by the photoelctric conversion elements consisting of adjacent elements 102, 104, and 105 is small in amount. By these prosesses, solution and light transmission rate are improved.
