PURPOSE:To obtain the title fibers of markedly increased mechanical strength with industrial advantage by drawing the yarn formed by coagulating a spinning dope containing an acrylonitrile polymer of high polymerization degree, an organic solvent and water, at a high ratio through a specific process. CONSTITUTION:A spinning dope containing an acrylonitrile polymer e.g. of 100wt.% acrylonitrile content and over 500,000mol.wt. an organic solvent such as DMF and water is subjected to dry-wet spinning process to prepare a coagulated yarn. The yarn is drawn through a multi-stage process, the drawing ratio reaches over 15 times to give the subject fibers of over 15g/d strength and over 200g/d elastic modulus. The high-ratio drawing the achieved by drawing the coagulated yarn in hot water having a temperature gradient, then drawing over 100 deg.C, finishing the yarn with an oil, drying at 100-150 deg.C, then drawing at 150-250 deg.C at 1.05-1.2 draw ratio.
