PURPOSE:To prevent the wear of a magnetic recording medium by abutting a rotary member against the magnetic recording medium instead of a magnetic head in the starting or completing period of the rotary driving of the magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:Freely rotatable rotary rollers 21, 21 are supported before and behind the progressing direction of the magnetic recording medium 12 of a magnetic head 14 and vertically moved according to the rotary state of the magnetic recording medium 12. Namely in the period causing no air layer at the start and stopping times of the magnetic recording medium 12 the rotary roller 21 is lifted with a supporting frame to the position higher than the medium sliding face of the magnetic head 14 to get in touch with the magnetic recording medium 12. Since the freely rotatable rotary roller 21 is allowed to abut on the magnetic recording face of the medium 12 where wear is especially a problem, the contact of the magnetic head 14 and the medium 12 is prevented in the start and stopping periods having no protection of the air layer and the wear of the medium 12 can be prevented.
