PURPOSE:To attain uniform venting of gas during carbonization and to obtain an impermeable carbon material free from blister and cracks by molding and curing a thermosetting resin mixed with a plasticizer and carbonizing the cured body in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A plasticizer is added to a thermosetting resin and mixed, the mixture is molded and cured,and the cured body is carbonized in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to obtain a desired impermeable carbon material. Furan resin and/or phenol resin is preferably used as the thermosetting resin. The pref. amt. of the plasticizer added is 5-30wt.% of the amt. of the thermosetting resin. In case of <5wt.%, the effect is not well produced. In case of >30wt.%, the mixture is liable to foam and the impermeability is reduced. Aggregate such as powder of the carbide of a thermosetting resin, carbon black or other carbon powder may be added to the mixture. The aggregate may be fibrous. |
