The tape carrier (1) is fed past the recording head (4), which incorporates at least one integrated circuit for control of data modulation of the laser light via modulators. The head has a single optical input coupled to a laser source (8), and components for further feed of laser light (7) to a predetermined number of parallel modulators, each of which is controlled by the integrated circuit. Each modulator has an output for emission of the modulated laser light, and the emitted light gives rise to an equal number of parallel data columns in the feed direction (D) of the tape carrier. - A number of modulator blocks corresp. to the tap carrier width each contain a predetermined number of modulators and the related number of integrated circuits, each block giving rise to a data column on the tape carrier.
