The machine combines the operations of reading an identification code, e.g. a bar-code and of deactivating a protection label, e.g. a magnetically coded strip on the article. Once deactivated, a bona fide purchaser may remove the article without setting off alarms. The combined code and strip label is placed in an exact position on the article. This accuracy of placing means that the operation can be performed automatically by a machine without human intervention. The system is connected to a computer which can also act as an automatic debit machine, paying for the article via the purchaser's account when he keys in a PIN code. The system may also reactivate the protection when returning items to stock.
