PURPOSE:To minimize transmission losses in the forward direction even if polarizing separation prisms of the same constitution are used, by making incident angles to the polarizing separation films of 1st and 2nd polarizing separation prisms coincident with each other. CONSTITUTION:This optical isolator is constituted in such a way that a 45 deg.-Faraday rotor 3 is provided between the 1st polarizing separation prism 1 which has an incident- and emission-side faces on the rectangular surfaces opposing to each other of a parallelepiped which is formed by translating a parallelogram (excluding rectangles) in its vertical direction and a polarizing separation film 11 which is parallel with a plane intersecting the parallelogram at right angles on its diagonal lines and the 2nd polarizing separation prism 2 which is positioned to a location fixed when the 1st prism 1 is translated in the direction of the incident optical axis and rotated by 45 deg. and has the same shape as that of the 1st prism 1. When the incident optical axis of the 1st polarizing separation prism 1 is made parallel with all surfaces except the incident- and emission-side faces, incident angles to the polarizing separation films 11 and 21 of the prisms 1 and 2 become equal to each other. Therefore, excellent loss characteristics can be obtained even if polarizing separation prisms of the same constitution are used.
