PURPOSE:To raise the efficiency of exhaust gas purification, by applying alternating voltage whose phase is different from the other one, of each of a pair of electrodes of a discharge device, in this discharge device adapted to resolve nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, for repeating the discharge alternately between the electrodes to double the discharge time. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust pipe 2 of an engine 1 is equipped with a noiseless discharge device 3. This noiseless discharge device 3 is equipped with a discharge pipe 5, formed with a pair of electrodes A, B to each of which alternating voltage whose phase is different from the other one, is applied, in plural exhaust routes 4. Then, a power source 7 which applies alternating voltage to the electrodes A, B through power feeding lines 6a, 6b, respectively, and a phase control device 8 which is set on one 6a of the power feeding lines, and applies alternating voltage whose phase is different from the other one, to one B of the electrodes, are set. Moreover, a detecting element 10, which is set on the other power feeding line 6a and detects the current leak in the discharge pipe 5 through a coil 9 wound around the other circumference of the power feeding line 6a, is set. In this way, NOx in the exhaust gas is resolved by discharge energy, and the exhaust gas is purified.
