An olefin polymerization catalyst component is obtained by halogenating a magnesium compound of the formula MgR min R sec wherein R min is an alkoxideoraryloxidegroup and R sec is an alkoxide or aryl-oxide group or halogen, with a halide of tetravalent titanium in the presence of a halohydrocarbon, and contacting the halogenated product with thionylchloride or an acid halide and a tetravalent titanium compound.
