CARBON FILAMENT

A molten carbonaceous pitch is drawn and the obtd. fiber is infusibilized, then carbonized and opt. graphitized. The continuous phase of the pitch precursor is optically isotrophic at the drawing temp. in the molten state. The structure of the cross-section of the pitch fiber is of random or onion skin type, and the structure of the cross-section of the infusible fiber and carbon fiber is equally of either random or onion skin type.
