PURPOSE:To inexpensively and easily produce amalgamated zinc alloy powder for dry alkaline batteries with which generation of gaseous hydrogen is suppressed by mixing Al with molten Zn, spraying the mixture, and subjecting the resultant dry zinc alloy powder to dry amalgamation by mercury or mercury compd. CONSTITUTION:Al is mixed preferably at about 0.001-0.2wt.% with the molten Zn and if necessary, >=1 kinds of Pb, In, Cd, Tl, and Ga which increase a hydrogen overvoltage are mixed at about <=1.0% therewith to obtain the zinc alloy powder. This zinc alloy powder is subjected to the dry amalgamation by using the powder or gaseous mercury or mercury compd. such as amalgam in a reaction vessel. The amalgamated zinc alloy powder which has the high effect of suppressing the generation of the gaseous hydrogen in spite of the low degree of amalgamation and is capable of providing excellent battery performance is thereby obtd. as the cathode active material for the dry alkaline batteries.
