摘要 PURPOSE:To execute an optical arithmetic operation with high accuracy by allowing two coherent linearly polarized light components to be made incident on a space optical modulator, multiplexing each linearly polarized light component which is subjected to an optical modulation is accordance with optical information recorded in advance, and executing a prescribed arithmetic processing. CONSTITUTION:The luminous intensity of input optical signals 1a, 1b is recorded to space optical modulators 2a, 2b as, for instance, optical information related to the density. Subsequently, for the purpose of a calculation, arithmetic light beams 3a, 3b consisting of a linearly polarized light component are made incident on the modulators 2a, 2b, respectively. The inputted arithmetic light beams 3a, 3b are subjected to the intensity modulation in accordance with the recorded optical information and emitted. As for the arithmetic light beam 3b of them, a variation in the polarizing direction of 90 deg. is given through a polarized light variable element 6. Next, the arithmetic light beams 3a, 3b are multiplexed by a beam splitter 8. Among the multiplexed arithmetic light beams, only a polarized light component in a prescribed polarized light direction is allowed to transmit through an analyzer 9, and the transmission light quantity is photodetected by a photodetecting means 10, by which a prescribed calculation is executed. In such a way, an optical arithmetic operation can be executed with high accuracy.
