PURPOSE:To reduce the cost of a device by driving a depth sounding sensor reciprocally in a direction of depth sounding, detecting the tilt angle to the reciprocal driving direction, and performing an image forming process wherein obtained depth sounding data and inclination data are used as inputs. CONSTITUTION:The depth sounding sensor 3 is supported 4 pivotally at the lower end of a column 2 and also pivoted 7 on a driving rod 6. An inclinometer 12 is fitted to the sensor 3 and its tilt angle is detected. Then a sensor driving mechanism 5 puts the driving rod 6 in linear reciprocal motion to drive the sensor 3 reciprocally at an angle theta to the direction of depth sounding. Simultaneously, a digital sounding machine 14 sends a depth sounding signal to the sensor 3, which sends an acoustic wave to the bottom of the sea, etc.; and the sensor 3 receives its reflected acoustic wave and inputs the obtained depth sounding data to the depth sounding machine 14 to calculate the distance, whose signal is inputted to a personal computer 16. At this time, the personal computer 16 inputs slanting view data from the inclinometer 12 and also inputs data from a heaving sensor 19. The personal computer 16 performs an image forming process for a depth sounding area by using those data to display an image on a CRT display 20.
