Protection of plants against diseases caused by soil- and seed-borne microorganisms is effected by providing the plant seeds with a protective coating contg. a fungal or bacterial culture extract. The coating contains ascospores of Chaetomium globosum in an amt. of 10 power4-6x10 power 5 ascospores per seed. The coating is formed by (a) wetting the seeds with coating soln., (b) starting to dry the soln. (c) mixing with a powder contg. the ascospores while the coating is still tacky, and (d) completing the drying. The coating soln. comprises (i) H2O, methylcellulose and gum arabic, (ii) H2O and Fe phosphate, or (iii) H2O, clay, alginate and formulating aids.
