PURPOSE:To make quick and highly reliable cassette loading with a simple constitution, by detecting the size of a tape cassette and vertically moving the cassette after the cassette is horizontally moved, with the interval between the centers of reel turntables being made to correspond to the size of the cassette, while the cassette is horizontally moved. CONSTITUTION:The size of a cassette is discriminated by means of cassette size detection amplifiers 50-52 and a cassette size discriminating circuit 88 and the cassette is moved in the horizontal direction during the period from the setting of a holding circuit 56 through a pulse generating circuit 82 to the resetting of the circuit 56 by the output of an intermediate position detection amplifier 54 by means of a motor driving circuit 58 and cassette moving motor 15. During the period of the horizontal movement, a reel turntable moving motor 36 is similarly controlled and the interval between the centers of the reel turntables is adjusted. Outputs of reel interval/position detection amplifiers 62-64 corresponding to the size of the cassette passed through switches 89-91 which work in response to the discrimination output of the circuit 88 are work in response to the discrimination output of the circuit 88 are impressed upon a pulse generating circuit 85. Then the motor 15 is similarly controlled and the cassette is moved in the vertical direction. Thus quick and highly reliable cassette loading can be performed with a simple constitution.
