The safety system incorporated in a detonator for the explosive charge in a shell includes an ignition pin (18) carried by a hammer element (17) held back against the force of a spring (22) by a blocking member (23) with centrifugally operated strips (26). The hollow rear part of the hammer has recesses (28) holding centrifugally released balls (27), supported by the sloping end (29) of a sleeve (14) round the hammer. Ahead of the ignition pin is the fuse (20) with a centrifugal arming mechanism. The fuse is retained inside a spherical rotor (19) which is swung by the spin of the shell from a safe position into an armed position where the fuse is aligned with the ignition pin. The rotor is held in position until the shell is fired by a securing pin (31), and is then held in the armed positoin by a small pin which fits in a hole (36) in the rotor, parallel to its axis. USE/ADVANTAGE - Spin operated detonator for explosive shell. The mechanism is prevented from returning to the safe condition shortly before the target is reached.
