PURPOSE:To correct shading with a high precision by correcting shading in the same position as a card read position. CONSTITUTION:When a shading correction reference face 5a of a card correcting mechanism 5 is positioned in a read position P by a card positioning mechanism 3, an emboss reading part 10 is operated to preliminarily generate data required for shading correction. When a card 1 is inserted, the card 1 is inserted between a card positioning mechanism 3 and a card correcting mechanism 5. The shading correction reference face 5a of the card correcting mechanism 5 is pushed up and is drawn back to a drawback position P1 by insertion of the card 1. Next, the emboss reading part 10 is operated to read an embossed surface 11 of the card 1. Read data is corrected by obtained correction data.
