Device for laterally closing off the casting space in an installation for continuous casting of a metal product between movable walls, including, at each of the lateral ends of the said space, a closing-off element intended to contain the liquid metal laterally during casting. This device is characterised in that each closing-off element 20 includes a composite element 21 formed by the juxtaposition of a rigid plate 22 made from refractory material and of a layer of insulating material 30, this composite element being shaped and held so that the refractory plates 22 of the two closing-off elements are opposite each other, each being in sliding contact with one edge of each of the two movable walls 11, 12, and so that a minimum operational clearance j is produced between the said refractory plates and the movable casting walls. <IMAGE>
