PURPOSE:To attain the read of uniform density with simple constitution by arranging a light source whose lengthwise luminous quantity is nearly uniform in parallel with the subscanning direction so as to attain reading even to a transparent original. CONSTITUTION:A light source 7 is lighted and the 1st mirror 2 is opposed to a reference face 8 at one end in the subscanning direction and the density distribution of a reference face 8 corresponding to the luminous quantity distribution by the light source 7 is made incident in a photodetector 6, it is read in the main scanning direction and the data is set as a shading correction data. Then a transparent original such as a film is placed on an original platen, the 1st mirror 2 and the 2nd, 3rd mirrors 3, 4 are moved in the subscanning direction and a photodetector 6 reads an original face 1 and shading correction is applied to the data. Thus, the original face 1 is read over the entire face by a uniform density.
